Teamster and driver to the territory's Adjuster; former customer, current debtor
At a glance
Moves like a man listening for a sound behind him.
Rangy, hard-used.
A catalog prosthetic left arm, Item No. 0812, brass and hickory, eleven payments outstanding.
Their story so far
Lost the arm under a quarry tram at nineteen and ordered the replacement out of the Grand Annual because it was the only one he could pay for monthly. It is an ordinary catalog line — page 812, nothing special, four thousand sold. He has been paying it off for six years and driving for the woman who would repossess it for four.
The crack in them
Would rather owe a person than ask them for anything.
How they sound
Rough tenor with a laugh always half-loaded; goes very quiet and very precise on the occasions when the arm does something he did not ask it to.
Their music
Wagon-brake iron and an unresolved harmonica phrase, with a faint mechanical click landing on the downbeat.
What they carry
- The prosthetic itself, Item No. 0812, and the installment book that goes with it.
- A short-barrelled coach gun that he has never once had to use in front of Odile.
In their words
Eleven more and it's mine.
I'll drive. You read.
