Independent forensic assessor contracted by insurance houses, shipping brokerages, and occasionally the Precinct when they need someone who will produce findings in writing and stand behind them in court.
At a glance
Dark hair kept close and practical. Dresses in charcoal and deep navy — not for effect, but because she has decided this is the correct set of colors for professional credibility and has not revisited the question. Carries herself with the posture of someone who learned early that physical presence is a variable she can control and therefore should.
Lean and economical, the build of someone who considers the body a conveyance and maintains it accordingly.
A faint chemical stain on the inside of her right index finger from years of handling carbon paper and developing solution. Eyeglasses with unusually thick frames that she removes only when reading very small text, which she finds insulting to mention. A small horizontal scar along the left jawline that she has never explained and does not acknowledge.
Their story so far
Isadora Vant spent twelve years inside the Hermes Consolidated actuarial division before leaving under circumstances the company describes as a mutual restructuring. She built her independent practice on the cases Hermes sent her to lose and didn't. She is expensive, methodical, and has never retracted a filed report.
The crack in them
She treats every person she meets as a problem to be solved rather than a life being lived, and is genuinely confused when they resent it.
How they sound
A precise mezzo-soprano with the exactness of someone accustomed to being the smartest person speaking, and who qualifies everything unless she is certain. Consonants land hard at the ends of words — every sentence terminates like a period being pressed into wax. When she is certain, her pace accelerates almost imperceptibly. When she is uncertain, she stops entirely rather than falter. Silences are architectural, not accidental.
Their music
Dry harpsichord runs over a low electrical hum. Precise, mechanical, almost cold. Occasional dissonant string chord when her certainty cracks.
What they carry
- A leather document case with a triple-latch closure containing her active case files, a calibrated measuring rule, and a carbon-paper ledger she has carried since her first independent case — the original entries still legible under seven years of subsequent pages.
- A small brass instrument of her own construction that she calls a resonance gauge — technically a modified galvanometer, but calibrated to ambient divine field distortion rather than electrical current; she has never explained to anyone how she built it or how she knows what its readings mean.
In their words
That is not what the document says.
I have already accounted for that.
Show me the second set.
