Postmistress of Bell Junction, the territory's largest mail office

At a glance

The calm of someone who has been the most informed person in the room for two decades without ever saying so.

Solid, still.

Reading glasses on a cord she never actually uses; a sorting case behind her rebuilt to her own scheme.

Their story so far

Nineteen years behind the same counter. Every order form for every item delivered into four counties has crossed her hands, including the countersigned ones, which she is required to log but not to read. She has logged all of them and read none, and she can recite the ledger.

The crack in them

Has never in nineteen years opened a piece of another person's mail, and is only now working out what that cost.

How they sound

Cool, exact soprano of clipped precision that gives dates and numbers the way other people give directions; never raises it, and lets the pauses carry the weight.

Their music

Sorting-case wood and a rubber stamp struck twice, over a low sustained organ note.

What they carry

  • The Bell Junction receipt ledger, nineteen years, complete.
  • Spoiler for The Grand Annual — select to reveal
A countersigned order form dated three weeks after her husband's death, never filed, kept in a Bible.

In their words

I have it. Fourth of March.

That form did not come through this office.
