Licensed river pilot and informal broker between the waterfront's legitimate trade and Hades' lower-city freight operations — a man both sides find useful and neither fully trusts.
At a glance
Looks like river work and hard winters and someone who used to be broader before something took the bulk out of him. His clothes are functional and salt-stiffened and always slightly wrong for the room he is in.
Lean and weathered, ropey through the forearms, with the particular stillness of someone accustomed to keeping their weight centered on a moving deck.
A burn scar that covers the left side of his neck from collar to jaw, old enough to be silver-smooth; eyes that are a pale, unsettling grey-green that people consistently misremember as darker; a habit of standing with his back to something solid.
Their story so far
Rector Fen has piloted the Acheron Cut for twelve years, longer than most pilots survive the political crossfire between Poseidon's port authority and Hades' waterfront interests. He operates the barge tender Pale Reckoning, takes jobs that require discretion rather than speed, and has never lost a cargo. Nobody asks how.
The crack in them
He cannot leave a debt unaccounted — not money, not harm, not kindness — and this compulsion to balance every ledger has made him a weapon anyone patient enough to hand him the right grievance can aim.
How they sound
A gravelly bass with a dry, gallows edge — warm in short bursts, abraded at the rim, like a brass instrument played in a cold room. He speaks in compressed rhythms, words arriving in clusters then cutting off cleanly. Silence is a tool he deploys deliberately. When he is frightened or lying, a faint hitch appears between syllables — barely there, consistent, undeceivable to anyone paying attention.
Their music
Low cello drone beneath irregular percussion — the sound of a boat hull against a dock at night. Occasional breath tones from a bass clarinet. Never resolves.
What they carry
Spoiler for Caelum Reach — select to reveal
A brass transit compass that no longer points north — it hasn't for three weeks, since the night of the impossible death, and the needle now drifts toward something Fen cannot name and has stopped trying to locate directly.- A waterproof ledger in oilcloth — every cargo, every transit, every payer, recorded in a private cipher nobody else has the key to; twelve years of things moved through the city that should not have moved.
In their words
That's not a question with a clean answer.
The river doesn't care what you meant.
Mark it and move.
