Adjuster (recovery agent) for the Grand Annual, western territory

At a glance

Dressed for a bank in a territory that does not have one.

Spare and upright.

Ink on the second finger of her right hand that never fully washes out; a repossession seal on a neck chain.

Their story so far

Six years an Adjuster, the only one working four hundred miles of frontier. She recovers merchandise on defaulted installments, from ploughs to prosthetics, and she has never once failed to bring an item back. Twice she has brought back an item from page 1140, and both times the Company paid the bonus without comment and did not ask her what she saw.

The crack in them

Reads the conditions before she knocks, and believes — every time, against all evidence — that the conditions are complete.

How they sound

Low, unhurried contralto, coolly persuasive — reads aloud beautifully and sounds like a receipt being itemised; drops half a register and slows down when she is frightened, which is the only tell she has.

Their music

A single struck piano note under the dry rasp of a page turning; strings only enter when she has been wrong.

What they carry

  • A recovery satchel with a folding seal-press and four hundred blank forms.
  • Spoiler for The Grand Annual — select to reveal
Her own indexed copies of six years of filed recovery reports, in a tin under the wagon board.

In their words

Read me the conditions.

The Company does not accept returns in that condition.
