Independent claims investigator — she takes cases from insurance brokerages, shipping concerns, and private parties who need something lost found or something found explained, without involving the Precinct.

At a glance

A Black woman in her late thirties, angular-featured, with close-cropped natural hair she keeps severe for professional reasons and which softens her face when she neglects to. Dresses in dark, practical wool — good quality, years old, well-maintained. She looks like someone who decided long ago what she needed to look like and has not revisited the question.

Lean, economical — the build of someone who walks everywhere and eats when she remembers to.

A scar bisecting the left eyebrow, origin she does not explain. Ink stains on the inside of her right middle and index fingers that no amount of washing fully removes. She carries her weight forward, onto the balls of her feet — a posture that reads as readiness to people paying attention.

Their story so far

Magdalene Voss worked seven years as a detective-grade analyst inside Athena's Precinct before resigning under circumstances that the official record describes as 'voluntary separation following a disagreement over case disposition.' She has been independent for four years. She has a reputation for closing cases that other investigators decline and a secondary reputation for delivering results that nobody entirely wanted.

The crack in them

She trusts the pattern of a thing more than the people inside it, which means she is reliably right about systems and reliably late to see when someone she knows has changed.

How they sound

A soft, melancholic alto that carries the way smoke carries — unhurried, pervasive, arriving in places before she does. She speaks at the pace of someone who has learned that silence costs other people more than it costs her. Consonants land with precision; vowels drag a half-beat longer than standard. When she is calculating, her voice drops. She almost never raises it. The effect is that a raised voice, when it comes, stops rooms.

Their music

Low brass and a single sustained cello. The rhythm of a typewriter underneath. Occasional muted trumpet that never quite resolves. Coal-dark and deliberate.

What they carry

  • A ruled leather field journal — the current volume is number eleven. The previous ten are in a locked strongbox in a rented room she does not live in. The journals contain annotated maps of every notable transaction, movement, and contradiction she has observed in Caelum Reach since leaving the Precinct.
  • A Precinct-issue brass detection loupe, serial number filed off. She kept it when she left. She uses it every working day. She has considered returning it approximately once.

In their words

The file doesn't lie. The filing does.

Tell me what you left out.

I've seen this shape before.
